Tactus SF wins 2020 SFEMS/CAC grant

Tactus SF was a successful grant winner for 2020 from the California Arts Council and in partnership with San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS). SFEMS awards CAC the grants for affiliate projects that strengthen the Bay Area's early music community through outreach and innovation.

Project: Educational opportunity for underserved youth in conjunction with their winter concert

Proposal: Tactus SF proposes to facilitate student attendance at our February 8, 2020 concert Music for Mercy at Saint Columba Catholic Church, a largely African American congregation in Oakland. Saint Columba Catholic Church has an active and varied music program. Tactus SF hopes to introduce Early Music to the congregation’s musical experience. Tactus will give 50 free tickets (25 pairs of tickets) to youth (under 18) and one accompanying adult along with two AC Transit Day Passes, one adult fare and one child fare, with each pair of concert tickets.

In addition to being treated to our concert, the young people will get to hear a 15-20 minute pre-concert talk (tailored to both the young people and the adults in the audience) by Nicholas Jones. The students at the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts are passionately committed to immersing themselves in music and developing their personal abilities. By providing admission to our concert, Tactus SF hopes to bridge the gap between theory and experience for them.

Music for Mercy will be a concert of Renaissance music begging mercy from the powers that be. The program will include English repertoire of Byrd, Farrant, Tallis, Wilbye, and neo-Renaissance composer Tanmoy Laskar, as well as marvels by Spaniards Morales and Victoria, Franco-Flemish composers Lassus and Ockeghem, and the distinguished German, Hassler. The audience will enjoy rarely performed choral favorites calling on Christ, the Virgin Mary, Love, and Death, lamenting sin and sorrow, and pleading protection and preservation.

Advance tickets are now available for our concert. Visit tactus-sf.org for more information.
